November is known as lung cancer awareness month. The entire month of November is observed to raise more awareness and break the stigma about lung cancer.

Among both men and women, it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, surpassing other cancers. The awareness month seeks to educate the public more about the causes and risk factors associated with it.

Let's fight the battle you don't hear about by supporting the sufferings you don't see.

What Is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer, both small and non-small cells, is the second most common cancer among men and women worldwide.

According to WHO around 2.2 million people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year.

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lung but spreads and affects the respiratory system and other body parts. Cancer begins when abnormal cells in the body start to grow out of control.

There are two major types of lung cancers

1. Small cell lung cancer

About 10% to 15% of all lung cancer is small cell lung cancer (SCLC). This type of cancer grows and spreads more than non-small lung cancer.

2. Non-small lung cancer

About 80% to 85% of lung cancers are non-small lung cancers (NSLC). It is the most common type of cancer seen in people who smoke and is more common in women than in men. It is also more likely to occur in younger people than other types of cancer.

Regardless of age, lung cancer affects everyone. Although it typically affects more people over the age of 65, recent studies indicate that it can even affect people between 24 and 28.

But the risk factors increase with age.

Why does lung cancer awareness month matter?

Throughout November, lung cancer awareness is observed to break the stigma around it and spread more awareness. Its main objective is to proactively raise more knowledge about the potential dangers of it globally.

It is crucial to educate people more about the dynamic of the disease, the symptoms, early detection, and the importance of lung cancer screening.

Early detection of signs and symptoms is the key to helping reduce many lives.

The history of lung cancer awareness month goes way back to the year 1995. Initially, it was observed just for a day, but gradually, it expanded to cover the entire month of November with time.

The risk of health problems increases as more and more people adopt unhealthy lifestyles. People often smoke at work to relieve stress, but that is not the only reason.

Even people who never smoke are exposed to danger. It is the consequence of second-hand smoke.

You may have friends and family members or even colleagues who smoke daily, contributing to your lung cancer risk. Second-hand smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer for both men and women.

Spreading awareness about it will eventually reduce collateral damage.

"It is unfortunate that covid and lung cancer share many of the same symptoms. However, cancer doesn't go away as covid symptoms do. Thus, staying informed about the latest lung cancer research and knowing the difference will make it easier to detect early signs."

Your social media team can help circulate it throughout November month.

5. An interactive telehealth consultation

Throughout November, your workplace or organization can offer free follow-up consultations to lung cancer patients. Also, you can offer your employees free screenings at work or encourage them to get screened early.
